Scores for Moss Listening

Scores for Moss Listening is a collection of moss-inspired text scores, written between 2024 and 2025. This collection has grown from a year-long period of collaborative research as part of Moss Worlds – an interdisciplinary research project based at the University of Manchester, led by Dr Anke Bernau, Dr Aurora Fredriksen, and Dr Ingrid Hanson.

Between 2024 and 2025, Moss Worlds brought together academics and artists from the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as independent practitioners, to explore the political, botanical, aesthetic, and affective aspects of urban mosses.  Across a series of participatory workshops, moss walks, talks, presentations, and exhibitions, we came to know mosses through a multitude of lenses: from fields as diverse as botany and ecology, heritage and collections, literature, music and sound art, digital arts, human geography, microbiology, textile arts, and of course bryology – the field most dedicated to mosses and their intimate, often startlingly beautiful miniature worlds. Scores for Moss Listening can be played in the browser (and works best in fullscreen mode). The scores in this collection can be approached as scores for performance, or as meditations, exercises, or teaching strategies to invite attentiveness and relationship with our more-than-human neighbours. 

Physical versions of the scores will also be available from August 2026.
